STEF DRIESEN

Stef Driesen's paintings are influenced by the works of Northern European Old Masters, and on initial viewing appear to fit into the category of landscape painting. Upon closer observation however, these shadowy vistas of valleys and rivers reveal human forms. Vague and often contorted bodies are conjured from the profiles of steep cliffs, twisted trees, and hollows. In other instances heads or spectral figures hover in the sky free from any organic anchoring. Driesen's paintings equate the fragility of the human condition with notions of the romantic sublime.
