TOM ORMOND

In his complex paintings Tom Ormond constructs imaginary architectural schemes and layers them on top of striped or poured zones of black paint. Archival photographs of Nuclear explosions and Utopian building schemes provide the impetus for Ormondís compositions and his technique of imposing geometric structures over abstract, swirling shapes points to a desire to order and quantify natural forces. Ormondís paintings frequently depict clustered forms comprising of an incongruous array of elements including gas clouds, scaffolding, electrical components, and commonplace DIY materials. An ambiguous approach to scale, and the selective use of more painterly elements juxtaposed with areas of intricate detail allow these forms to be read as planets one minute and the inner workings of a microprocessor the next.
