Group Show: Birgit Jürgenssen, Ana Mendieta and Hannah Wilke in 'Feminist Avant-garde 1970's', ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany

18 November 2017 - 8 April 2018

The important artistic movement Feminist Avant-garde has so far received little attention in art history. The aim of the exhibition at the ZKM is not only to include the feminist avant-garde in the canon of art history, but also to highlight the pioneering achievements of these artists.

For the first time, artists born in the war and post-war years were able to study art appreciably at the academies, emancipating themselves from the passive role of the muse and the model. In their works, they ask radically new questions for society, the art industry and the roles of women. The rejection of traditional, normative ideas combines the commitment of the artists of this generation. Even if they did not know each other, related works were created.
