Alison Jacques Gallery is pleased to announce that Roy Oxlade will have a solo exhibition at Hastings Contemporary, Hastings.
In July 2019, the newly relaunched Hastings Contemporary (previously Jerwood Gallery) will open two solo exhibitions of work by Roy Oxlade and Tal R. This will be Oxlade's first major public gallery exhibition. Both shows will be contextualised by a one-room display of work by celebrated British modernist, David Bomberg (1890-1957).
Roy Oxlade: Shine Out Fair Sun will feature work from the 60 years of Oxlade’s artistic output, including some of his earliest paintings produced in the 1950s while studying as a student of David Bomberg, alongside Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff. This exhibition will give visitors the opportunity to encounter an extraordinary and previously overlooked artist’s vision that impressed many of his own students and contemporaries. Oxlade believed that art should be rooted in nature and the artist’s immediate surroundings, taking inspiration from the objects of daily life, ‘things, trees, houses, cats, people’.
Hastings Contemporary will champion modern and contemporary art in an international context through an ambitious expanded programme. Building on the reputation the Gallery has built in Hastings and beyond, Hastings Contemporary will continue to draw on the theme of painting, presenting works by a broad range of artists, from historically essential and internationally renowned artists to emerging practitioners, as well as exploring the rich cultural history of artists from the South East. The gallery was initially built to house the Jerwood Collection, whose Modern British focus helped build Hastings’ national reputation as a beacon for painting.
