group show: Ian Kiaer in 'Teaching Painting: Fully Awake', Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh

25 July - 25 August 2019

Fully Awake is an exhibitions series curated by Ian Hartshorne (Manchester School of Art) and Sean Kaye (British Higher School of Art and Design, Moscow) who are members of the organisation Teaching Painting. Formed at Manchester school of art in 2015, the initiative seeks to investigate the teaching of contemporary painting practices within art schools.

Displayed at the Edinburgh College of Art, this group show embraces an inter-generational approach to celebrating the practice and teaching of painting, and features thirteen artists, including Ian Kiaer, Sonia Boyce and Alexis Harding.

Each artist currently teaches at one of the UK’s art academies, and will show their work alongside that of two guests: an artist who has taught them, and an artist whom they have taught.⁣

Kiaer, who is a professor of Fine Art at Oxford University’s Ruskin School of Art, has selected Trish Lyons - one of his tutors at the Royal College of Art - and Lee Triming - whose PhD thesis Kiaer supervised.
