Nicola L. is featured in the exhibition 'Made in L.A. 2020: a version', the fifth iteration of the Hammer’s acclaimed biennial bridges east and west with complementary presentations at the Hammer and The Huntingdon, curated by Myriam Ben Salah.
Works by 30 Los Angeles–based artists are presented at both institutions—two versions that make up the whole. The exhibition features new installations, videos, films, sculptures, performances, and paintings, many commissioned specifically for the exhibition.
While living in Paris in 1960, Nicola L. started developing her 'Pénétrables', a series of canvases into which viewers could introduce parts of their bodies, getting into the skin of the painting. 'La Chambre en Fourrure' (1969) was conceived as a playful environment, but conveyed a strong political statement addressing the individual’s social situation. Viewers were invited to insert their legs, arms, and faces into the outer shell of the freestanding “room” and would find themselves costumed in the work.
